Questions

Why do buyers pay less than melt value?+

Buyers have to test, refine and resell the metal, and they need a margin. Refiners that buy by mail usually keep the smallest cut; pawn shops usually keep the largest.

How do I find the karat of my jewelry?+

Look for a small stamp inside a ring or near a chain clasp: 10K or 417, 14K or 585, 18K or 750. Sterling silver is marked 925. Your phone camera’s zoom helps.

What do GP, GF or HGE stamps mean?+

Gold plated, gold filled or heavy gold electroplate. The gold is only a thin layer, so the piece is worth far less than solid gold of the same weight.

Do you price coins differently from jewelry?+

Yes. A common bullion coin like an American Eagle or Maple Leaf is worth more to a coin dealer than to a scrap buyer: dealers pay about 95–99% of the metal value, scrap buyers about 90%. When your photo shows a coin, we compare coin dealers too. Rare and key-date coins can sell to collectors for more than their metal.

Is it safe to sell gold by mail?+

With an established buyer, yes. Reputable mail-in buyers send a free, insured, tracked shipping kit, test your items on arrival, make an offer, and return everything free if you decline. Photograph and weigh your pieces before you ship, and check the buyer’s reviews first.

How does selling by mail work?+

Request a free kit, pack your items and ship them insured. The buyer tests and weighs them, then sends an offer, usually within a day or two. Accept and you’re paid by check, bank transfer or PayPal in a few days; decline and they send your items back.

Is this site free? How do you make money?+

It’s free, with no sign-up. We don’t buy gold and the buyers we list don’t pay us. If that changes, for example through referral fees, we’ll say so clearly on every page, and it won’t change how buyers are ranked.

How do you pick the best deal?+

We compare the price each buyer publishes for your exact piece, checked daily. Final offers depend on their testing.

Do you buy gold?+

No. We are an independent calculator. We show what each kind of buyer should pay and link to buyers you can compare.
