What 18K means
18K gold is 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75%. It’s stamped 18K, 18KT or 750, the European marking. It’s softer and richer in color than 14K.
Much European jewelry, luxury watches and designer pieces are 18K.
When 18K is worth more than melt
Signed pieces from Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari and similar houses often resell for well above their gold value. Check the inside of the piece for a signature and serial number.
For those, a consignment shop or an auction house is usually a better route than a refiner. Unsigned 18K jewelry sells for its gold.
